Can I avoid Emergency Tax in Ireland?

Updated: Jul 8, 2022

The answer is YES! ABSOLUTELY!

The reasons you can be put on emergency tax could be a few:

1: If you are starting your first job in Ireland, meaning that you are relatively young and just secured your first work but have been living in Ireland and already have a PPS Number (Personal Public Service Number issued in Ireland).

2: You just came to Iive in Ireland and it is your first job in Ireland and you either have already PPS Number (Personal Public Service Number issued in Ireland) or you don't.

3. For whatever reason you had a break from working as an employee in Ireland (such as being self-employed, emigrated, was on a sick leave or other leave, stopped working altogether) and you have now started back working.

In order to avoid being out on emergency tax you need to make sure that you have done the following before starting your job:

A: You have received your PPS Number (Personal Public Number issued in Ireland). This is always! made up of 7 numbers followed by either one or two letters. To find out more about PPS Number please see: https://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/social_welfare/irish_social_welfare_system/personal_public_service_number.html

To apply for PPS Number please go to

and follow the registration steps.

B: Once you have your PPS Number, you need to make sure you register your first/new Employment with Revenue (The Office of the Revenue Commissioners). You will need to provide the name of your Employer and your Employer's Registered Number (ERN). This can be obtained from your Employer and is also visible on your Payslip.

You can do that online by registering with Revenue and inputting the Employer's name and ERN, see how to do that here:

Or

If you prefer you can ring Revenue on 01-738 3636 and ask for Revenue to add your Employer's details. Have your PPS handy when talking to them. And try to ring in the morning as well as they seem to close early enough around 1 pm :)

The above should work, if any problems, please contact us and we will be happy to help.
